About This Project
Lea, an architecture student from Germany, spent three weeks in Portsmouth, UK on a training and study placement organised by IBD Partnership Group. Our team arranged her accommodation, her placement and her support throughout the stay, and a tutor met her on arrival and led a city tour. She lived with a local host family, and the programme ended with a certificate ceremony at the IBD offices before she flew home.
What the Student Did
Lea was placed with a local architecture practice, where she split her time between the office and the field. At her desk she worked alongside professional architects on live projects, picking up how drawings, specifications and client requirements move through a British practice. On site visits she saw those plans become real buildings, learning to check work against drawings, spot problems early and talk with contractors and engineers.
Working in both settings gave her a fuller picture of the profession than either could alone. She came away with stronger technical communication in English, a better grasp of UK building practice and the confidence to ask questions on a working construction site.
Her host family made the stay just as memorable. They took her to explore Portsmouth and the surrounding area, so evenings and weekends were as full as her working days.
“I had a wonderful experience! Both IBD itself, the host family, and the host establishment were all incredibly kind. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!”
