About This Project
In March 2023, five students from the Réunion, France, travelled to Limerick for a three-month work placement organised by IBD Partnership Group. The programme paired each student with a local employer suited to their field, arranged host family accommodation for the full stay, and provided tutors on the ground throughout, from arrival and welcome through weekly check-ins to a certificate ceremony marking the end of the placement.
The placement ran from 28 March to 21 June, with each student matched to a different sector. On their final day, tutors visited each student individually at their workplace to hand over a certificate of completion, before the group flew home to the Réunion.
What the Students Did
Loiss spent her placement at a hotel in the city centre, picking up front-of-house hospitality skills and the kind of composure under pressure that only comes from a fully booked front desk. Chamila was placed with a local education organisation, developing classroom support skills and learning to adapt on the fly to whatever a room full of children actually needed that day. Emeline split her time between two organisations, starting in education before moving to a child and family support service, giving her a working understanding of both sides of youth support work inside a single placement.
Ryan completed his placement with a business just outside the city, gaining a first real look at how a professional office runs day to day, correspondence, scheduling, the kind of admin that never makes it into a prospectus. Siva was placed with a community organisation, where the work leaned heavily on listening and problem-solving for people he’d never met before that week. Five students, five sectors, and three months to build skills that don’t show up on a transcript but matter the moment they’re back at work.
